COMPETITOR INTELLIGENCE

Competitor Intelligence in the UAE and Gulf

Know exactly what your rivals charge before you react.

SMRC turns observable, public-facing competitor activity into decisions you can act on: what rivals charge, how they promote, where they are stocked, and how they treat a real customer. Every figure is captured in the field, geo-stamped, photographed and quality-checked, then benchmarked against your own position.

How we design, field and analyse competitor intelligence. Every programme is built around your objective.
What it is

Competitor intelligence is the systematic, ethical and repeatable collection of observable competitor activity, converted into pricing, promotion, distribution and service decisions.

It is not espionage and it is not scraping of confidential data. It is disciplined field observation and desk analysis of what competitors actually do in-market across UAE channels, from Dubai Mall banners to a Deira baqala. SMRC runs it through four interlocking pillars, each a distinct data-collection mode, so a client sees the whole competitive picture rather than one online snapshot.

THE FOUR PILLARS

Four ways we read the competition

Pricing and promotion tracking records competitor shelf and list prices, pack sizes, price-per-unit and promotional mechanics such as multibuy, percentage off, bundles and gift-with-purchase, with promo depth, duration and display support captured at an agreed cadence. That cadence can be one-off, weekly, monthly or timed to Ramadan, DSF, back-to-school or GITEX.

Mystery-based benchmarking sends trained evaluators into competitor locations or digital journeys as ordinary customers, scoring a structured questionnaire on greeting, product knowledge, upsell, quote given, closing behaviour, environment and follow-up. Distribution checks audit which competitor SKUs are physically present across a defined outlet universe, producing numeric distribution, facings and out-of-stock incidence. Service comparison assembles range, price architecture, guarantees, hours, delivery and digital presence into a like-for-like matrix against your own proposition.

WHEN TO COMMISSION IT

Choose competitor intelligence when a decision is on the line

Commission CI when you need to set or defend a price and promotion position, enter a new emirate, channel or category, or diagnose why you are losing share in specific stores. It also earns its keep when you need to validate a competitor claim before reacting, or arm a board, listing negotiation or category review with hard field evidence rather than assertion.

The service answers precise buyer questions. Where do we sit on price and price-per-unit versus each rival, by channel and emirate? What promo mechanics and depths are competitors running, and when? In how many of the stores that matter is each competitor listed while we are missing? How good is their in-store experience compared with ours, step by step? And are competitor claims of lowest price, widest availability or best service actually true in-market?

METHOD AND RIGOUR

How we run it, end to end

We start from the decision, not the data. First we lock the competitive set, the outlet and channel universe, the metric list and the cadence, then pre-agree a client benchmark so every competitor figure is relative to something you control. Instruments are built next: the price and promo capture sheet, the mystery-shop scenario and scoring rubric, the distribution audit form and SKU master, all in Arabic and English where the interaction requires it, professionally translated and back-checked rather than machine-translated.

Fieldwork is mobile-first with mandatory photo evidence of the shelf, price tag, promo POS and planogram, geo-stamped and time-stamped on every visit. Quality control is the credibility engine: we verify GPS coordinates and timings against the route, validate photos against captured values, run logic and range checks on prices, back-check a share of visits and reject anything that fails. Analysis then converts raw capture into price indices, promo calendars, distribution-gap lists, share-of-shelf, scorecards and a service matrix, each carrying the specific action it implies.

THE DIFFERENTIATOR

Every price, promotion, facing and mystery visit is geo-stamped, time-stamped and photographed, so findings survive a pricing committee or a boardroom challenge.

  • Bilingual Arabic and English teams matched to a credible buyer persona, from a national-oriented banking hall to a Dubai Marina premium supermarket.
  • We capture the in-store reality a scraper cannot see: the promoted price, the price-per-unit, the shelf mechanic and the quote a salesperson actually gives.
  • For retail price, promotion, distribution and share-of-shelf work, a UAE retail panel of around 1,000 stores provides a ready field backbone.
What we measure

What SMRC measures and what you learn

What we measureWhat you learn
Competitor shelf and list prices, pack sizes, price-per-unitExact price position by SKU, channel and emirate, so you hold, cut or raise price without guessing
Promotion tracking: mechanic, depth, duration, feature and displayThe competitor promo calendar and intensity, so you time your own offers to win rather than collide
Numeric distribution and distribution gapsThe specific stores where rivals are listed and you are not, a direct sales target list
Share-of-shelf, facings and out-of-stock incidenceHow visible each rival is at the moment of choice, and where availability is failing, yours or theirs
Mystery-shop service scorecards, step by stepAn objective ranking of competitor sales and service execution versus yours, with the exact steps to fix
Quote or price actually offered in the customer journeyThe real transacted or offered price, including discounts a genuine buyer can negotiate, not just the list price
Service-comparison matrix, feature by featureOne view of range, price architecture, guarantees, hours, delivery and digital versus each rival for positioning and sales enablement
POSM, planogram and new-launch or range-change detectionEarly warning of competitor launches, delists and merchandising shifts, so you respond first
Photographic, geo- and time-stamped evidence packDefensible proof for pricing committees, category reviews and marketing or legal claims
How we work

How it runs

  1. Frame the decision

We define the competitive set, the outlet and channel universe, the geography by emirate and catchment, and the exact metrics that will change a client decision.

  2. Build and route

We design bilingual capture instruments, mystery-shop scenarios and scoring rubrics, then sample outlets and build efficient field routes with quotas by banner, channel and location.

  3. Field and verify

Matched evaluators complete visits and journeys, capturing photo, geo and time evidence on mobile, before quality control validates GPS, timings, photos, logic and back-checks.

  4. Analyse and deliver

We produce price indices, promo calendars, distribution-gap lists, scorecards and a service matrix, delivered with an evidence pack, clear recommendations and an optional tracker dashboard.

Why SMRC

Why SMRC for competitor intelligence

SMRC is an independent, Dubai-based market research consultancy serving the UAE and wider GCC, with a senior team whose backgrounds include time at MEMRB and GfK. Our fieldwork integrity rests on GPS-tracked teams, mandatory photo evidence and layered quality control, and our Arabic and English capability lets us match evaluators to the right nationality, language and buyer persona across a majority-expatriate market. We work within UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 (PDPL) and applicable free-zone rules such as DIFC and ADGM, and follow ESOMAR-style research ethics, treating any individual-employee information captured in a mystery shop as personal data to be minimised and reported at role level.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Is competitor mystery shopping legal in the UAE?

Yes, when done properly. The evaluator acts as an ordinary customer and captures only public-facing, observable information such as prices quoted, service given and product on shelf. SMRC does not misrepresent itself to extract confidential data, and handles any individual-level information in line with UAE PDPL and research ethics.

How quickly can we get findings?

For a focused single-market brief we can move fast. GPS-tracked field teams and a mobile capture workflow allow same-week findings on tightly scoped price, promotion or distribution checks. Larger multi-emirate or ongoing tracking programmes run to an agreed cadence.

How do we know the field data is real and not desk-invented?

Every visit is geo-stamped and time-stamped with photo evidence, and passes quality control including GPS and time verification, photo-to-value validation, logic checks and back-checks. Findings ship with an evidence pack you can audit.

Can you cover both modern trade and traditional trade, in Arabic and English?

Yes. SMRC fields bilingual Arabic and English teams and samples across modern trade such as hypermarkets, supermarkets, pharmacy and electronics, plus e-commerce and traditional trade such as baqala and independents, matching evaluator profiles to the outlet and buyer persona.

How is this different from an automated price-scraping tool?

Scrapers read online list prices only. SMRC captures the in-store reality: the promoted price, the price-per-unit, the shelf mechanic, the actual quote a salesperson gives, share-of-shelf and physical availability, with human judgement and evidence across offline channels a scraper cannot see.

Can this run as an ongoing tracker rather than a one-off?

Yes. Price, promotion and distribution work is often set up as a recurring tracker, weekly, monthly or event-based, with a trend dashboard, so you see competitor moves over time rather than a single snapshot.
