The GCC Retail Universe

49,100 outlets, counted on the ground.

A retail universe is the complete count of every outlet selling a category in a market. It is the denominator behind distribution, market share and any credible sample. Since 2019 SMRC has built seven full-country outlet censuses across the UAE and Oman, totalling 49,100 outlets, each one found door to door and GPS-fixed by our own field team.

In one line

How many retail outlets has SMRC censused in the GCC?

SMRC has censused 49,100 retail outlets across seven full-country census programmes in the UAE and Oman between 2019 and 2025. A full-country census is not a sample. It is a door-to-door count in which every outlet that sells the category is found, GPS-fixed and typed, so the client gets the true size and shape of the market rather than an estimate. SMRC runs these with its own GPS-tracked field team, which is how it can stand behind 100 percent coverage. The programmes span automotive, grocery and optics, and paint, and range from 2,600 outlets in a focused universe to 12,000 outlets in a single multi-category study.

The figures below are SMRC's own field record, not modelled estimates.

How a census is built

Every outlet found, not estimated.

Door to door, full coverage

Field teams walk every street of the defined geography so that no outlet selling the category is missed. The output is the whole universe, not a projection from a sample.

GPS-fixed and typed

Each outlet is captured with a GPS coordinate, a photograph and an outlet type, so the frame is verifiable and can be revisited or re-audited later.

In-house field team

SMRC runs the fieldwork with its own trained, GPS-tracked auditors rather than an anonymous crowd, which is how it can stand behind 100 percent coverage.

A frame you can reuse

The census becomes the sampling frame for everything that follows: distribution tracking, retail audits, share of shelf and outlet-level analysis.

Why it matters

The universe is the number everything else depends on.

In Gulf markets a large share of retail sits in traditional trade, the small independent stores that a desk study never sees. Without an accurate outlet universe, distribution and market-share figures are guesses. An SMRC census gives brands the real denominator, so every number built on top of it is sound.

True distribution

Numeric and weighted distribution measured against the real count of outlets, not an estimate.

Sound sampling

A complete frame means representative, defensible samples for tracking and audits.

Territory planning

Outlet-level, GPS-fixed data supports route, coverage and expansion decisions.

One partner, whole Gulf

SMRC extends the same census method across the UAE, Oman and the wider GCC.

Common questions

The GCC retail universe, answered.

What is a retail universe census?
A retail universe census is a complete count of every outlet that sells a given category in a market. Unlike a sample, it finds and records every store door to door, so brands know the true number and location of outlets rather than an estimate. It is the foundation for distribution, market share and sampling.
How many outlets has SMRC censused?
SMRC has censused 49,100 retail outlets across seven full-country census programmes in the UAE and Oman between 2019 and 2025, covering automotive, grocery and optics, and paint universes. Each outlet was found door to door and GPS-fixed by SMRC's own field team.
What is the difference between a census and a retail audit?
A census counts and maps the universe of outlets that exist. A retail audit then measures what is happening inside a sample or all of those outlets: availability, pricing, share of shelf and compliance. The census gives you the frame; the audit gives you the performance.
Which markets does SMRC census?
SMRC has completed full-country censuses across the UAE, covering all seven emirates, and in Oman nationwide, and extends the same method across the wider GCC including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain on a project basis.
How does SMRC guarantee full coverage?
Fieldwork is carried out by SMRC's own trained, GPS-tracked auditors who walk every street of the defined geography. Every outlet is captured with a GPS coordinate, a photograph and an outlet type, so coverage is verifiable and the frame can be re-audited.
Can I commission a census for my category or market?
Yes. Tell SMRC the category and the geography, and SMRC will scope a full-country or defined-area census, run the door-to-door fieldwork and deliver a GPS-fixed outlet universe you can build distribution and audits on. You can start on the contact page.
