See how your merchandisers really behave when they think no one is watching.
An independent mystery shop of your own field merchandising team, graded on how they represent your brand, treat shoppers and store staff, and use their time on the floor.
A merchandiser audit checks the person on the floor, not the shelf they were sent to fill.
You already know what good merchandising looks like on paper. What you cannot see from a report is how your field team actually behaves in the aisle: whether they wear the uniform and badge, how they answer a shopper who interrupts their stocking, how they speak to store staff when the supervisor is elsewhere, and whether the job gets done or the phone comes out. SMRC sends independent auditors who pose as ordinary shoppers to observe exactly that, then hands you the evidence as fair, usable coaching material.
Brand representation comes first. Your merchandiser is a walking advertisement for you inside a store you do not own. Our auditor notes whether the uniform is worn correctly, the ID badge is visible, grooming meets your standard, and the general conduct looks professional to a shopper standing nearby. These are the details a store manager quietly judges you on, and the ones that decide whether your team is treated as a partner or a nuisance.
Then we test the human moments. We watch how the merchandiser handles a real interruption, how they interact with store colleagues when they believe no one senior is around, and how focused they stay across the visit. A team can hit every planogram target and still lose you shelf goodwill by being rude, distracted or invisible. The audit surfaces that gap while it is still fixable through coaching rather than after a store account has cooled.
The method only works if it is invisible, so we brief auditors your merchandisers will not recognise and send them in as normal shoppers browsing the category. They linger, watch and note behaviour discreetly, never announcing themselves and never staging a scene. Everything is measured against a shopper’s ordinary experience of the aisle, which is exactly the experience your store partners see every day.
At a natural moment the auditor uses a scripted interruption trigger, a simple line such as, Excuse me, do you know if you have more of this in the back, to see how your merchandiser responds when pulled away from a task. Before the auditor leaves, discreet before and after photos of the aisle capture the real quality and tidiness of the work. This is deliberately fair: it is graded against your own standards, delivered as coaching evidence, and never designed as entrapment.
Independent auditors your merchandisers have never met, so the behaviour you see is genuine, not the performance staff put on for a known supervisor.
| What we measure | What you learn |
|---|---|
| Uniform, ID badge and grooming | Whether your brand is represented professionally in stores you do not control. |
| Response to a shopper’s interruption | If a real customer question is met with courtesy or visible annoyance. |
| Tone with store staff when unsupervised | How your team protects, or quietly damages, the retailer relationship. |
| Focus, phone use and break patterns | Whether paid floor time is spent working or drifting. |
| Before and after aisle photos | The true standard of the finished merchandising work. |
| Presence and punctuality on the day | If scheduled coverage matches what actually happens in store. |
| Product knowledge under a shopper query | Whether your merchandiser can help a buyer or simply stocks shelves. |
| Overall shopper impression of the visit | How your field presence reads to the people you want to convert. |
We agree the behaviours, uniform rules and service expectations that matter to your brand, then build the grading sheet and interruption script around them.
Auditors your team will not recognise visit the target stores as ordinary shoppers, observe discreetly and run the scripted interruption at a natural moment.
Each auditor records behaviour against your standard and takes discreet before and after photos of the aisle, with no scenes and no entrapment.
You receive scored results, photo evidence and specific observations the same week, ready to use as fair, direct coaching for each merchandiser.
SMRC is an independent market research boutique in Dubai, founded in 2017 by a team whose careers were built at MEMRB and GfK, and we run our own GPS-tracked field force across the UAE, Oman and the wider Gulf. That independence is the point: your merchandisers cannot game an auditor they have never met, and you get an outside read rather than an internal one. We work in Arabic and English, brief every auditor to observe fairly and discreetly, grade strictly against your standards, and return findings the same week so coaching happens while the visit is still fresh. The method is built to be ethical, evidence-led and useful, never a trap.
A retail or shelf audit measures the shelf: availability, planogram compliance, pricing and share of shelf. A merchandiser audit measures the person your brand sends to that shelf: how they represent you, treat shoppers and store staff, and use their time. One checks the display, the other checks the human standing in front of it.
Yes, when it is done our way. Auditors observe a shopper’s ordinary experience, grade only against standards you have already set, and never stage entrapment. The result is delivered as coaching evidence so your team can improve, not as a hidden trap designed to catch people out.
It is a natural, pre-agreed line the auditor uses to test customer service, such as asking whether more stock is available in the back. It creates a real service moment without revealing that an audit is happening, so you see a genuine reaction rather than a rehearsed one.
No. We deploy independent auditors who have no prior contact with your team, and we rotate people across visits so no face becomes familiar. That is what keeps the observed behaviour genuine rather than a performance staged for a known supervisor.
You receive a scored assessment against your standards, discreet before and after photos of the aisle, and specific written observations for each merchandiser and visit. Everything is framed so you can sit down with your team and coach directly from the evidence.
Across the UAE, Oman and the wider Gulf, using our own field force in both Arabic and English. Coverage can run from a single flagship store to a national sweep, with findings returned the same week.
Tell us the decision you need to make. We will design the study around it and bring you evidence you can act on, in Arabic and English, across the UAE and Gulf.
